Hello, I’m Madelyn Skinner, a senior at Northview High School with a passion for art. Since childhood, I have loved painting, drawing, sculpting, building, and other art forms. Art has always been my medium for exploring the complexity of the human experience, serving as a voice for those who may feel unseen. I am continuing to pursue my passions at SCAD, where I will be studying to become a prop and set designer. Beyond the art room and my messy desk, you will likely find me listening to music, collecting miniature things, or enjoying time with friends. Thank you for taking a moment to learn about me!
My artwork is an extension of myself and an embodiment of all the things I love. I create to better understand myself and to remind others to embrace our humanity – raw emotions, struggles, and experiences. My passion has led me to inspiring individuals, life-changing experiences, and a deeper understanding of who I am. I hope my work can guide others towards discovering their place in the world too. I thrive in the process of creation, the ideas, preparation, and the making. I enjoy working with oil and acrylic paints, pencils, clay, jewelry, and other mediums. Each form offers a different lens through which to understand the world, creating a diverse example of the human experience that is both personal and universally shared.
Why is creating art important to me?
Creating is important to me because art is not only a medium for self-expression; it can be a movement, a statement, and sometimes, an act of rebellion. Throughout history, art has served as a powerful catalyst for change, opening new possibilities. Art allows us to visualize emotions that are otherwise difficult to express. It is a therapeutic process, a way of confronting our inner selves. Creation is the purest form of human expression, and it is my favorite experience.
How does creating art relate to your experiences outside the classroom or to other subject areas?
Art is connected to most facets of my life. It is both my therapy and my most meaningful form of self-expression. My interests and experiences heavily influence my art, which is why I immerse myself in various sources of inspiration – music, literature, and all things that spark my curiosity. It is through this broad exposure that I find my best creative energy.
